Opera and Ballet Theatre (1884 - 1887, Felner and Gelmer)
The modern theater building was erected on the site of the original Odessa City Theatre, built at the behest of Duke of Richelieu. The former theater stood from 1809 to 1873 when it was tragically destroyed by fire accident.
The city authorities decided to hold the competition to select an architect to design the new theater. There were 43 entrants, and 2 Viennese architects Felner and Gelmer, were selected. They were experienced as they already designed several opera houses in Europe.
The opera house was constructed in 3 years and incorporated all that architectural art has to offer from the Baroque, Italian Renaissance, Classical and Rococo periods. The balconies feature columns of all types - Ionic, Corinthian and Tuscan - arches, arcades, galleries, cupids, sculptures of figures from Greek and Roman mythology and drama, all of which contribute to create a wonderful light effect. The ceiling is painted with scenes from Shakespeare.
The abundance of marble, burgundy velvet, glittering crystal and sparkling gilt mirrors all attest to the high degree of craftsmanship of the architects, sculptors and tradesmen who were involved in creating this masterpiece.
